Vintage black-and-white postcard of a tree-lined recreation ground in Barnet, showing a winding path bordered by fences and greenery. The image is overlaid with scattered painted dots in bright colours (red, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange, and pink), creating a playful contrast with the aged photograph. Handwritten text along the bottom reads “Reached home quite safely about 11 pm, just caught tram & train alright,” with printed labels “RECREATION GROUND” and “BARNET.”

Join us for From Barnet with Love, a creative workshop celebrating the stories, voices, and everyday experiences of people living in Barnet.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore local history and contemporary life through art and storytelling. Inspired by postcards from the Barnet Local Studies Archives and illustrations of the borough, you’ll create your own mixed-media postcard capturing what life in Barnet means to you today.

Using painting, drawing, collage, and words, participants will design postcards that share memories, hopes, and perspectives on their neighbourhoods. The workshop also draws on Barnet’s role in the UK’s first official airmail service, connecting past and present through creative expression.

Selected works will be featured in a public exhibition at the RAF Museum this autumn, displayed alongside archival material to bring Barnet’s stories across generations into conversation.

From Barnet with Love is part of Barnet Council’s cultural impact award programme, Light + Flight, a year of creativity, connection, and belonging in Barnet. Light + Flight is presented by Art in Barnet. It is funded by a Cultural Impact Award, part of the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture programme, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and Arts Council England.
