Inspired by the borough’s rich filmmaking heritage and its proud status as a Borough of Sanctuary, Woven Ink will work those who have sought sanctuary in the borough to co-create an original animated film that connects early film pioneers with contemporary stories of migration, belonging, and identity.
The project will also be embedded within Middlesex University Film School Animation course, giving students the opportunity to bring the borough’s history to life while developing their own creative and storytelling skills.
The films will be screened at the Light + Flight celebratory finale in November 2026.
"We're looking forward to collaborating with and sharing the stories and experiences of those who have migrated to Barnet, alongside the wider heritage of film making and makers in the area. We're excited to see how we might be able to integrate and include representations of historic and archival materials within the animation piece we’ll be co-creating. We'd love to be able to then mirror these with the participants own photographs and visual memories – adding to the richness of the piece."

About the Studio
Woven Ink are an independent animation and creative studio, existing to share people’s stories and lived experiences, in compelling and beautiful ways.
Founded in 2017 by Isolde Godfrey and Jess Harvey, Woven Ink evolved out of close friendship, a love of storytelling, and a shared desire to make ripples of positive change in our communities and wider society.
Their work sets out to increase awareness, understanding, and empathy, across many themes and topics, by sharing under-told stories and lived experiences through hand-made, thoughtfully crafted animations and visuals.
Light + Flight is presented by Art in Barnet. It is supported by a Cultural Impact Award, part of the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture programme. It is made possible with additional support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.
