Pollinators, Pathways and the Historic Walks of Finchley is a community heritage
project running from February 2026 to February 2027 that reconnects people, green spaces, and local history through three historic walking routes. The project links community gardens and growing spaces along routes that trace historic boundaries between Finchley Common and early settlement. The project will tell the stories of the spaces’ heritage including the people and community groups who enrich nature in these special spaces.
Using the journeys of pollinators as both a literal and symbolic form of “flight”, the project explores how light, movement and landscape have shaped Finchley’s development, from open common land to suburban growth. As a result of Finchley Common’s urbanisation, pollinators populations have perilously declined, however they continue to travel between surviving green spaces and “pollinator pit stops”, forming unseen ecological corridors that echo historic routes.
About East Finchley Community Trust
East Finchley Community Trust is a charity established in 2010. We work to improve the environment of our local area. We established the East Finchley pollinator project, worked closely with Friends of Market Place Playground and support community gardens in the area.
About The Finchley Pollinator Project
East Finchley Community Trust is collaborating with The Finchley Pollinator Project.
The Finchley Pollinator Project is a community-led group working to improve local habitat for pollinators. Over the last four years we engaged many of the local organisations, groups and individuals, increasing marginalised people’ wellbeing by engaging with nature through joyful activities which also improve the local area.
Light + Flight is presented by Art in Barnet. It is supported by a Cultural Impact Award, part of the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture programme. It is made possible with additional support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.
