The Major Artistic Commission is the creative centrepiece of Light & Flight — a landmark artwork that will bring Barnet’s Cultural Impact Award 2026 to life.

This large-scale, visually striking installation will embody the themes of light and flight — exploring hope, movement, journeys and belonging. It will be co-created with residents across 10 neighbourhoods through a borough-wide programme of workshops, storytelling and hands-on making.

The final artwork will be:

Co-created with communities, shaped by the voices, ideas and identities of Barnet’s diverse residents.

Accessible, immersive and spectacle-led, rooted in Barnet’s heritage and contemporary culture.

Installed in a prominent public location (to be announced), where it can be visited, explored and experienced over time.

Brought to life during the Hero Festival, with live programming, performance and celebration.
