In 2024, Barnet was awarded a Cultural Impact Award, part of the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture programme, to deliver a year of artistic and heritage projects that invites our communities and residents to capture and celebrate the unique spirit of our borough.

Carnival performers dance and play drums outdoors, wearing bright blue, green, and pink feathered costumes, as smiling children watch and interact with them in a sunlit urban square.

Funding from Arts Council England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund will further support the vision of the Cultural Impact Award, enabling us to embed heritage-led events and initiatives into the programme.

Light + Flight was born from the collective vision of the over 2000 people who informed our initial London Borough of Culture bid and those who have since further shaped the ambition and identity of the programme.

Unfolding borough-wide across 2026, Light + Flight is rooted in community, creativity, and co-creation. It brings together artists, communities and local stories, for a year of performances, projects, and events, culminating in a major artistic commission and a free, multi-day arts and heritage festival. Light + Flight celebrates the borough as a sanctuary for people, creativity and bold ideas.

The programme’s unifying themes are two universally resonant symbols, rich with literal and metaphorical meaning. The symbolism of light – hope, visibility, inspiration – and the spirit of flight – freedom, innovation, and movement, reflect Barnet’s rich history and enduring identity. Light + Flight aims to illuminate Barnet’s hidden stories, contemporary creativity, diverse communities and next generation talent.

Light+ Flight is presented by Art in Barnet, the London Borough of Barnet’s arts and culture initiative.
